Jilin Sets 9 Percent Annual GDP Growth Target in 2001-2005Party Secretary Wang Yunkun of Jilin Province, northeast China, said the province will go all out to attain an annual 9-percent growth in its gross domestic product (GDP) in 2001-2005.This will give a big push to Jilin's economy, which he said is of a relatively small scale and suffers from a poor structure and low efficiency at present, said Wang, who is here attending the on- going session of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top law-making body. To hit the goal, the province has decided to improve its economic structure, upgrade traditional industries with high- and high-tech, and nurture a number of highly-efficient environment- friendly industries with local features, Wang said. The province will do a good job of promoting industrialization and urbanization, using information technology extensively, accelerating reform and scientific advance, and making breakthroughs in key areas and key industries for comprehensive economic and social development, he said. To achieve an economic takeoff in the province, Wang said, the provincial authorities will do its best to handle well "five relationships:" the relationship between development of " breakthrough areas" and that of the province as a whole, that between expanding the total economic size and improving quality, that between developing the high-tech industry and upgrading traditional industries, that between the state sector and the private sector, and that between accelerating development and acting according to the local ability. |
