2nd Guangzhou Subway Line Expected to Operate Half Year Ahead of Time

Lu Guanglin, general manager of Guangzhou Subway Corporation, disclosed on March 12 that the second line of Guangzhou Subway as a whole is expected to be put into operation by the end of 2003, over half a year ahead of schedule.

At the second subway line first section tunnel transfixion ceremony, Lu indicated that the Guangzhou citizens would be able to take the new subway line half a year ahead of time. Originally planned to be opened at the end of 2002, the first section that runs from the Guangzhou Railway Station to the Jiangnanxi Section, will have two stops added to both ends; the opening to traffic of the entire second subway line will also be shifted from early 2004 to the fall season of 2003.

It's reported that the first section transfixed on March 12 connects the Haizhu Square Stop and the stop in front of a park. The construction of the 1,100-meter-long tunnel began in June of 1999 at a total cost of 72.15 million yuan.

Lu said the second subway line project is progressing smoothly, most of the construction of subway stops and district projects will be finished within this year and work of fitting up and facility installation can be started afterwards. Judging from the present pace of the project, we are sure of an early opening of the second subway line.
