Malaysia, Thailand to Sign Accord on Joint Border Patrol
Malaysia and Thailand will sign a joint border patrol agreement next week aimed at checking smuggling activities and sneaking in of illegal immigrants, according to Bernama news agency Tuesday.
The agreement will be signed on March 20 by Army Eighth Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. Ramli Haron representing Malaysia and Special Colonel Akasak Sungsiri from the Haadyai-based Fifth Regiment of the Royal Thai Army in Sungai Golok in Malaysia's northern state of Kelantan bordering Thailand, the report said.
The agreement will pave the way for security forces to mount joint patrols along the Malaysia-Thailand border for three months, Bernama quoted Ramli Haron as saying.
Senior army officials from the two countries held a meeting early last month to draw up an action plan for the patrols, at which both sides agreed to meet every week during the joint patrol exercise to exchange information on the latest developments in the border areas,Ramli said.
