Shanghai Accelerates Transportation Construction

Shanghai began construction of over 20 infrastructure projects including tunnels, bridges and expressways at the beginning of this year.

An official from the municipal government said that in the coming five years, Shanghai will accelerate transportation construction.

By the end of 2005, the Huangpu River is expected to have 12 cross-river tunnels, with a total handling capacity of 70,000 vehicles per hour.

The on-going Gonghexinlu viaduct project will provide traffic convenience to over 100,000 nearby residents, who can take both cars and subways.

To release the traffic tension in the southwestern part of the municipality, the second phase project of the Huminlu viaduct will be put into operation in November this year, and is expected to be completed in 2003.

A 98-kilometer long high speed way which will circle urban Shanghai will be completed by 2002. A series of road reconstruction works will also be extended this year.

The official also noted that by the end of this year, a convenient traffic net will be put into operation.
