Sri Lanka's Tiger Rebels Violate Unilateral Ceasefire

Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels fired mortar bombs and artillery towards positions of government forces in the north of the country, violating their self-imposed ceasefire again, the defense ministry said on Monday.

The ministry said that Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels fired 81 mm mortars at Nagarkovil and Oddupeli in Jaffna peninsula over the weekend, injuring at least two soldiers.

It said that government forces retaliated using mortar bombs. The Tiger rebels also fired 120mm mortar bombs at army defense lines in Ariyalai on Sunday.

The LTTE rebels extended their unilateral ceasefire which started last December for a second time till March 24 and requested the government to reciprocate their truce offer.

The LTTE rebels have been fighting against government forces since 1983 in the north and east of the country for a separate Tamil state. More than 60,000 people have been killed in the bloody war.
