Top Lawmaker Vows to Improve OversightThe NPC should well position itself with regard to oversight and well coordinate steps with other units that exercise oversight and energetically carry out oversight by making full use of the powers endowed by the Constitution and other laws. Li Peng, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, made the remarks here Monday, at a group discussion of Northeast China's Liaoning Province during the ongoing Fourth Session of the Ninth NPC. He urged the province's lawmakers to develop closer ties with the people and local legislative bodies and voice the views of the people. The legislative oversight should be exercised according to law, he said. In his speech, the top legislator praised Liaoning, an old industrial base, for its progress in relieving local state-owned companies of their difficulties over the past three years. The province should make greater efforts to beef up its high- tech industries while fully displaying the advantages of such traditional industries as shipbuilding and oil production so as to seek new engines of growth that will bring the province's economy as whole onto the right track, Li said.
