Cambodia Sets Up Committee to Look After Ta Mok's Health

Cambodian government has set a committee to look after the health of former Khmer Rouge military chief Ta Mok, a senior military court official said Monday.

Sao Sok, head of military court prosecutor told reporters that the government established a committee in February to watch the health condition of Ta Mok and until now he has been sent to a public hospital twice.

Ta Mok, 74, was arrested in March 1999 in Cambodia's northern part near the Thai border and he has been detained in military prison in Phnom Penh since then.

Benson Samay, lawyer of Ta Mok, has revealed twice that Ta Mok' s health was in considerable situation and might die before trial if he is not properly watched or looked after by regular doctors.

Sao Sok, however, said that Ta Mok's health is fine, except little illness due to his old age.

Until now, two senior Khmer Rouge leaders are being detained, awaiting for the planned trial for their commitments believed to be responsible for some killings in Pol Pot regime in late 1970s.

It remains unclear when the trial will begin.
