Khatami Blames US Conspiracy Against Iran

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami Sunday strongly blamed the United States for its conspiracy against Iran.

Addressing the Majlis (parliament), Khatami said that Iran has established an independent and freedom-seeking regime in the region, foiling the attempts of those who launched campaign to restore their lost interests immediately after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Khatami said that "they hatched numerous plots and it was natural because the U.S. administration was exploiting the former Shah regime in Iran to secure its own interests. The U.S. enmity with the Islamic Revolution was thus natural."

The enemies exerted political and economic pressures on Iran, but Iran managed to neutralize the conspiracies thanks to the sacrifices of the Iranian people and the endeavors of officials, Khatami added.

He also called Israel "the other puppet regime of the US" because it "also engineered numerous conspiracies against our revolution."

When the Iran-Iraq war ended in 1988 and specially after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, the anti-Iran tone was expected to subside and new atmosphere was opened for Iran to breathe, but the pressures on Iran persisted with unjust allegations of its support for terrorism.

This was followed by the U.S. sanctions against Iran, which led to a high trade risk rate with Iran, Khatami denounced.
