Lawmakers Press for Efforts to Control Air Pollution in LanzhouNPC Deputies have called for greater efforts to clean up the air of Northwest China city of Lanzhou.During group discussions on Monday at the ongoing fourth session of the Ninth National People's Congress, Zhu Zuoyong, a deputy from Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province, said pollution has affected people's health, prevented investment and people with expertise from coming to the city and hampered the economic development and the implementation of the western China development strategy. Zhu proposed making a state key project the control of air pollution during a five-month- long winter due to the burning of coal. He urged the state to take measures to ensure the timely imbursement of funds for greening 20,000 hectares of the southern and northern hills of Lanshou to improve the ecological environment. Zhou Jiahua, vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, said Lanzhou, one of the worst polluted cities in the world, should borrow Beijing's experience to encourage the burning of natural gas and pipeline coal gas instead of burning coal and make great efforts to control exhaust emissions by motor vehicles. He proposed that the city use more mini water treatment devices, which cost less but yield quicker results. It was learned that the Gansu provincial government has already come out with a plan for controlling the winter air pollution and Yellow River water pollution in Lanzhou.
