Afforestation Project Launched in Ningxia

The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, an arid area in northwest China, recently unveiled an afforestation project in a bid to improve its environment.

The project covers all 19 counties and cities in Ningxia. It will take 11 years to complete and is estimated to cost 458 million yuan.

The region is to cover 529,000 hectares of land with trees and grass by air seeding and closing mountains to livestock grazing and fuel gathering.

When the project is completed in 2012, the amount of sand blown into the Yellow River each year will be reduced by half, a local forest official said.

Ningxia, which lies on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, has 425,000 hectares of forested area at present. Its vegetation coverage rate has risen from 6.3 percent in 1995 to 8.3 percent at present.
