ICRC Repatriates over 200 Eritrean Prisoners of War

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Sunday repatriated a total of 242 Eritrean prisoners of war (POW) who were set free by Ethiopia last Wednesday, said an ICRC press release here.

The repatriation took place between the towns of Rama and Adi quala, at Mereb River as the crossing point, according to the release.

The operation, which is the third repatriation of Eritrean POW, brings the total number of Eritrean POW released by Ethiopia and repatriated so far to 856, while a total of 618 Ethiopian POW have been repatriated by Eritrea since last December.

Under the peace treaty between the two countries signed last December in Algiers, the capital of Algeria, the ICRC had registered and visited some 2,600 Eritrean POW in Ethiopia and some 1,000 Ethiopian POW in Eritrea.

Ethiopia and Eritrea had engaged in a border conflict since May 1998, till the signing of the Algiers agreement.
