Putin Calls Mubarak on Mideast Situation

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday to discuss the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, Egypt's Middle East News Agency reported.

During the telephone conversation, the two leaders exchanged views over the future of the situation in the Palestinian territories after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was sworn in on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Russian news agency Interfax reported that Mubarak agreed to pay an official visit to Moscow during the first half of this year. The Egyptian leader made his first official visit to Moscow in September 1997.

Russia is one of the official sponsors of the Middle East peace process that kicked off in Madrid, Spain, in 1991. But Moscow's role has been eclipsed by its co-sponsor the United States.
