China Regulates Chinese Phonetic Alphabet Input Standard

"Standard for the Scheme of Chinese Phonetic Alphabet (Pinyin) Input with Universal Keyboard," will be put into implementation on June 1.

An official from the State Language Work Committee said Friday that experts at Beijing University of Languages and Culture and Beijing Information Technology College have spent two years working out this standard.

The standard has basically met the need of Chinese character information handling, and provided scientific regulations on Chinese phonetic alphabet input with the universal keyboard, said the official.

Chinese Phonetic Alphabet, or Pinyin, is an instrument to spell and pronouncing the universal Chinese words. China issued "Scheme of Chinese Phonetic Alphabet, Pinyin" in 1958, which has been widely used.

However, experts also point out that tone and syllable dividing of Chinese characters of the "Scheme of Chinese Phonetic Alphabet, Pinyin" cannot be expressed with a universal keyboard.

In the newly issued "Standard for the Scheme of Chinese Phonetic Alphabet (Pinyin) Input with Universal Keyboard," the keyboard can label any note and syllable dividing mark.

Experts believe that the standard will make the handling of Chinese character information more scientific.
