Rolex Files Suit Over Domain Name Registration

A lawsuit was filed Friday against Beijing-based Guowang Information Co, Ltd. by Swiss Montres Rolex S.A, which charged the Chinese company of illegally registering a web domain in the name of rolex.com.cn.

Rolex has registered its trademark in over 100 countries and regions in the world, making the "Rolex" and its crown-symbol logo widely recognized across the world, lawyers for Rolex said a hearing in the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court.

The world-famous watch manufacturer is asking Guowang Information Co. Ltd to revoke and stop using the domain name, and pay 20,000 yuan (some 2,410 US dollars) that Rolex has spent on court costs.

Guowang said its registration did not violate Chinese law.

The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court accepted the Rolex suit and an open trial will be held soon.
