Advisors Stress Reunification of Motherland

Members of China's top advisory body, the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, called Friday for efforts to guard against "Taiwan independence" and to promote the reunification of the motherland, saying this is the aspirations of all Chinese including Taiwan compatriots.

Addressing the third plenary meeting of the current CPPCC National Committee session, Li Ganliu said an increasing number of people in Taiwan are complaining the policy of the Taiwan authorities toward the mainland nearly one year after Taiwan's new leader took office.

It is the common wish of the people in Taiwan for stability and development in cross-Straits relations, said Li, who is also vice-president of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang.

He urged the Taiwan leader to respect people's will, accept the history and reality that the two sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one China, and reopen political dialog with the mainland.

Lin Haidong, a CPPCC member of Taiwan origin, said that a handful of separatists in Taiwan are carrying out separatist activities in the cultural and education fields. Besides Lee Teng-hui, Taiwan's new leader has also tried to sever cultural ties between Taiwan and the mainland.

Lin called for high vigilance against and firm opposition to "Taiwan independence in the cultural field."
