Chengdu, Major Information Port in W China to Be

As reported, Chengdu is going in for an Information Harbor, the biggest Internet information exchange center in west China and the biggest trade and service market of electronic products during the 10th Five-year Plan period.

By widening net-transferring capacity, the city is targeting at unifying telecommunication, broadcasting and TV networks along with other fundamental networks so as to make it a platform for public information transmission. The initial construction of the network will be a high-speed and broadband network covering a total of seven regions and 12 cities or counties. By 2005, the city is expected to reach a local capacity of some 3.2 million units, and some 136 thousand terminals for telnet.

For mobile communications, the renovation is to update it into a digital access network in urban area with part of it to realize dual way transmission and to have the city, counties and towns connected by optical fiber network. In addition, it is expected to have some 2.1 million Cable TV users in the city toward the year of 2005.

Other projects that contained in the information harbor scheme are to build up a database and service system for enterprises and consumers, modern payment system, and to make electronic transactions popular in finance, securities, industry and commerce, taxation, circulation as well as foreign trade, etc.
