New Participant Enters Shanghai's Telecom Market

The Shanghai branch of China Railway Communication Co. Ltd. (CRC) started operation Friday, increasing competition on the local telecommunications market.

It means that five companies, including China Unicom, China Telecom, Jitong, China Netcom, will compete to seize shares of local market.

Users are to benefit from the competition ultimately, which will lead to a 10 or 20 percent cut in fees for local calls and long distance calls, said the corp.

The CRC has a significant advantage and competitiveness in network integrity, coverage and technological equipment, said general manager of the branch Weng Guoxing.

The CRC has already reduced fees for fixed phone users of CRC under state authorization, while fees for long distance calls are some 20 percent lower than average.

Weng, however, admitted that it is still difficult for households far away from railways to benefit from his firm. He said the branch will start the renovation and expansion of the railway communications network.
