China to Boost Industrialization of Housing IndustryAccording to sources with an international symposium that concluded Friday in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, China will accelerate the industrialization of its housing sector in the following several years.At the symposium, experts and officials from around the world exchanged their views and experiences regarding the industrialization of the housing industry, and pledged to enhance cooperation in this regard. To boost the industrialization of the housing sector, China has started to develop 10 model housing projects, 10 experimental cities, and 10 model construction enterprises. By the end of 2005, the average productivity for Chinese housing sector is supposed to increase from the present 20 to 30 square meters per capita, the average service life of residences from 50 to 100 years, and the industrialization rate from 15 to 30 percent, according to a five-year plan initiated by the Chinese Ministry of Construction. According to experts, with abundant natural resources and a large population, Chongqing, the largest city in western China, has great potential to develop industrialized housing projects. Two years ago, experts from British South Bank University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Chongqing University started to jointly conduct researches on the promotion of the industrialization of the housing sector in Chongqing, which has so far received wide support both from home and abroad.
