Int'l Women's Art Exhibition Opens in Beijing
The 2001 Beijing International Exhibition of Women's Art opened Thursday in the China Art Gallery to mark the advent of the 91st International Women's Day.
The weeklong fair exhibits over 100 paintings and sculptures presented by over 60 female artists from 13 countries, including Egypt, Latvia, Britain, Hungary, France, the United States, Austria and Sweden. Among the overseas participants, six are the wives of foreign ambassadors in China.
It is the first time for the wives of senior foreign diplomats to exhibit their art work in Beijing.
The paintings of the ladies reflect their life experiences in China, reveal their understanding about the changing society and their exploration of women's social value, according to Tao Yongri, a female specialist in studying women's art.
The paintings and sculptures demonstrate various art styles and women's nature of beauty, an art reviewer said.
Some ladies even tried to introduce the techniques of Chinese paintings into their own drawings.
Tatjana Semane, wife of Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to China, said that it is China's long history and splendid culture that help her to produce such excellent paintings.
Many wives of foreign diplomats have started painting. They not only learn to paint, but also bring such paintings back to their country for exhibition.
The exhibition is jointly organized by the Chinese Association for Cultural Exchanges with Foreign Countries (CACEFC), China National Art Gallery and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
A CACEFC official said the exhibits are of great value in cultural exchanges, and the CACEFC plans for sponsor the art exhibitions regularly.
