Women Cadres Play Bigger Role in China

Statistics from the Organizational Department of the CPC Central Committee show that up to the end of 2000, the total number of women cadres has reached 14.895 million, accounting for 36.2 percent of all cadres in China.

A large number of women talents has sprung up thanks to the great importance the Chinese government attached to in enhancing the women's status and by giving full play to their initiative. Currently, there are 1.512 million women cadres in Party and government institutions, 8.811 million in public institutions, 4.572 million in enterprises in China. The contingent of women cadres has grown sharply and so their quality as a whole. Investigation showed that among the women cadres in Party and government institutions, about 59.1 percent have received education of junior college or above.

Large groups of women cadres have taken up posts of leadership in China. By the end of 2000, there were about 77,300 department women cadres at county level and above in the Party and government offices, accounting for 14.8 percent of all cadres of the same levels, an increase of over 40 percent than five years before.

In addition, more and more women talents have joined technical teams of various trades. By the end of 2000, there were about 11.708 million women technicians in China, of which 436,000 won senior professional titles and 3.263 million, titles of the medium professional posts, accounting for 40.6 percent of all technicians, an increase of 15 percent as against that five years before.
