Three Gorges Residents Making Room for Giant Dam Project

Local residents in the mammoth Three Gorges reservoir area are in good mood as they are moving to resettle in designated areas in eastern China and other places.

This indicates that the Chinese government has succeeded in moving about 1.2 million residents to make way for the vast reservoir of the mammoth Three Gorges Dam, said Chongqing Vice-Mayor Gan Guping, who is here to attend the on-going session of the Ninth National People's Congress.

The dam project involves the resettlement of more than 400,000 displaced rural residents, 90 percent of them in Chongqing, said Gan,

Most of the rural residents who have moved out have learned to love their new homes, Gan said. All of them have been duly compensated for and were free to choose their destinations.

The official did not say how many Chongqing residents have been moved out of the city. He only disclosed that some 125,000 farmers will be resettled in over a dozen other provinces and cities including Shanghai and Guangdong.

This year will see the most massive movement of residents to be displaced by the Three Gorges project, Gan added.
