HK Should Maintain Stability, Prosperity, Qian

Hong Kong should continue to maintain its stability and prosperity, said Vice-Premier Qian Qichen Wednesday.

Joining Hong Kong deputies in their group discussion, Vice-Premier Qian Qichen said that the situation in Hong Kong has in general remained stable over the past three years since China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over the territory on July 1, 1997, and such situation should be maintained.

With the powerful backing of the motherland, Qian said, it is easier for Hong Kong to maintain a long-term stability and prosperity and weather storms of any magnitude.

Over the past year, the situation in the country was good; the economy developed and the political situation was stable. "This is good for Hong Kong," the Vice-Premier said.

Hong Kong has gradually eliminated the impact of the Asian financial crisis; its cooperation and exchanges with the inland have been further strengthened, Qian Qichen noted. In this regard, the Zhujiang River Delta area in Guangdong will offer Hong Kong more opportunities, he said.

Both the inland and Hong Kong have deepened their understanding of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, which has been proved successful, Qian noted.

Joining Hong Kong deputies in their group discussion were also Jiang Enzhu, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, and Chen Zuo'er, deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.
