Urban Residents Urged to Get Relaxed

In the face of work stress urban residents should become relaxed and retain a healthy state of mind, according to some members of the National Committee of the Chinese People¡¯s Political Consultative Conference, China¡¯s top advisory body.

Qiang Yizhong from Shanghai, China¡¯s largest manufacturing center, said, ¡°The incidence of mental disorder is higher in cities than in the countryside.¡±

For example, Shanghai has 200,000 patients suffering from serious mental disorder and half a million people with psychological impediments.

He said, ¡°It is highly regrettable that the city has shown the tendency toward the increase in the number of well-educated young people with mental disorder.¡±

Mental disorder has become a disease seriously threatening the health of Chinese people and the people of other countries as well. According to the World Health Organization, some 400 million people across the world suffer from mental disorder or have psychological problems.

Among them 60 million suffer from schizophrenia.

He predicted that China will have more people suffering from mental disorder as a result of faster economic and social development, and increasingly intense competition.

He said, ¡°The psychological factor plays a special role

in causing mental disease. So, patients with mental disorder need to be taken better care of.¡±

Society should take care of such patents by treating them as a special weak group and create a fine environment

for them to take medical care and recover, he said.
