UN Security Council Slaps Taliban
Expressing deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday slapped the Taliban for lack of care for Afghan people.
The move came after the 15-member Security Council was briefed by the UN humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan, Kenzo Oshima, on the humanitarian situation in the country.
Kenzo Oshima told the Security Council that the Taliban, the biggest warring party in Afghanistan, appeared to be both unable and unwilling to cater to the basic concerns and needs of people under its control.
In a statement to the press, the council deplored the ongoing civil war in the country and the absence of effective government that might address the humanitarian crisis.
The council urged the donor community to respond generously to the appeal of the UN for 250 million dollars to address the most urgent basic needs of Afghans for the rest of the year.
The council condemned the February 26 edict by the Taliban to destroy all non-Islamic artifacts in the country.
According the United Nations, more than one million Afghans are facing immediate threat of famine.
