Guangxi's Farming Sector Dares to Participatein Global CompetitionThe farming sector of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous region has been growing rapidly over the past few years, creating favorable conditions for the region to partake in international competition. This remark was made by Lin Can, a deputy to the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, and director of the Guangxi Regional Department of Agriculture. Lin said that Guangxi has reported a high agricultural growth rate in recent years, with good crop harvests for several years in a row. "We have greatly expanded Guangxi's grain production capacity, with its grain security fully guaranteed," he said. Guangxi is now China's leading refined sugar and mango producer. It also ranks among the top three producers of longan, bananas and litchi. The living standard of local rural residents have risen substantially, with the per-capita income hitting 2,048 yuan in 2000. Lin said that over the past few years Guangxi has reported a steady increase in farm product exports, primarily fruits, live pigs, poultry and vegetables. Guangxi's largest farm product export is Asia, which takes in 60 percent of such products. Europe ranks second, taking in 20 percent. "Guangxi is now more than self-sufficient in terms of most farm products. With a unique tropical climate, it enjoys an enormous potential in exporting farm products," he said.
