Jiangsu to Rebuild 10 UniversitiesDuring the Tenth Five-year Plan period (2001-2005), the Jiangsu Provincial government will adjust and optimize structures of universities and rebuild 10 universities into China's top-ranking ones, according to Jiangsu net-news.The 10 prospective leading universities include Nanjing Normal University, Jiangsu University of Science and Technology, Suzhou University, and Yangzhou University. There are altogether 70 institutes of higher learning in Jiangsu Province, of which 25 have established sub-colleges for undergraduates that are publicly owned yet run by civilians. In addition, Jiangsu has 14 civilian-run colleges for technical professionals, 33 schools of higher learning set up independently for adults and 20 higher schools set dependently for adults. During the ninth Five-year Plan period (1995-2000), the government has adjusted structures of altogether 44 general universities and 28 higher adult schools. It has also built a batch of new undergraduate colleges, removed or merged some small-scale colleges of simple specialty, and merged nearly 30 medium-level colleges for professional training into general universities.
