Diplomatic Relations Established Between DPRK and Luxembourg

A joint statement on establishing diplomatic relations between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was released Tuesday, the local press reported.

The statement said representatives from the ministries of foreign affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg held talks in Luxembourg on March 5, 2001.

The talks followed an exchange of letters between the ministers of foreign affairs of both countries based on decisions made by the governments of both countries to acknowledge each other's independence and sovereignty.

During the talks, the two sides agreed to establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level based on the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention of Consular Relations.

They also expressed the hope that the establishment of relations would enable both countries to develop bilateral relations more effectively and provide greater opportunities for an exchange on issues of mutual interest and concern.
