Nanning-Kunming Railway to Transport 50 Million Tons of CargoThe Nanning-Kunming Railway, which runs 827 km from Nanning in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to Kunming in southwest China's Yunnan Province, will increase its annual cargo shipping capacity from the current 20 million tons to 50 million in 2005.
In next five years, the number of passenger trains running along the railway will increase from two to four, and the cargo trains will increase from eight to 16.
The electrified railway, a key national project, was put into operation in 1997.
China will invest 100 million yuan to build 16 new stations along the 491-kilometer section on the railway between Jiangxicun in Guangxi and Weishe in Guizhou Province.
Construction of 12 of the stations will be completed by the end of this year and the rest will be completed by the middle of next year.
Now, the railway department has set up 58 stations along the Nanning-Kunming Railway and the railway will handle over 100,000 tons of petroleum, fertilizer, building materials and industrial raw materials from ports in south China to the area.
Meanwhile, 100,000 tons of mining products and other items for export are being sent via the railway from southwest to the provinces of Guangdong and Hainan.
