HK Retail Sales Post Rise in January
Hong Kong's retail sales in January this year totaled 18 billion Hong Kong dollars (2.3 billion U.S. dollars), an increase of 1 percent over January 2000, the Census and Statistics Department said Tuesday.
After discounting the effect of price changes over the period, the volume of total retail sales increased by 2 percent, the department said.
On a year-on-year comparison, sales of footwear, allied products and other clothing accessories increased the most, by 24 percent in volume in January 2001. This was followed by commodities in supermarkets, food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco, and wearing apparel.
