Chinese Men Want Women to Play Dual Role: SurveyMen are now looking for the additional role of true professionals in their women while emphasizing their role in taking care of family, a survey has found.Carried out by the Beijing-based Horizon Research Group, the survey of 940 men and women aged between 20 and 50 in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou shows that the ideal woman is now a high-flying professional and a successful family care-taker as well. Nearly 48 percent of the 940 respondents had a higher regard for women who are both competent professionals and "understanding wives", nearly three times the figures for those who preferred career girls. Thirty-five percent of the respondents showed a preference for women who are family-oriented. "Asking women to be both competent at work and at home imposes a double burden on women and can stress them," said Liu Bohong, vice-director of the Women's Studies Institute of China under the All-China Women's Federation, after studying the survey result. A survey conducted by another Beijing company, the China Mainland Marketing Research Company, found that nearly 54 percent of its 720 female respondents disapproved of the view that career is more important than family -- more than 30 percentage points higher than those who felt career was more important. According to the survey, young women who have received higher education showed a more obvious interest in families than older, less educated women. "We also find that more and more women have started to have a say in their households," observed Zhou Jiang, the survey company's manager. |
