Two Killed in California School Shooting

Two people were killed and 13 others wounded Monday in a high school shooting near San Diego, California, according to latest reports from the city.

The shooting took place at Santana High School in Santee, California, northeast of San Diego, at about 9:25 a.m. (12:25 p.m. EST) inside the social sciences building at the school.

A suspect, who fellow students say is a ninth-grade male student, is in custody, the CNN reported. He reportedly had threatened to shoot someone at the school before.

The shooting reportedly resulted from a fight in the boy's restroom. Student John Sharp said the gunman was smiling as he emerged from the restroom and opened fire with a long barrel handgun.

"The student who was shooting came out, fired his weapon a few more times and went back in," he said. "The student stayed in the restroom until the police came, and they had guns drawn. It was quite a scene."

Lt. Glenn Revelle of the San Diego Sheriff's Department said there were at least 15 victims, two of them were a school security guard and a counselor.

Witnesses said there was a mess when the shooting occurred. "I heard gunfire and then I heard people screaming and everyone was running in, like, a big crowd," a panicked student told local reporters.

Alicia Zimmer, also a student, said that she saw a boy lying face down on the floor, a girl with blood on her arm and another with blood on her hands.

Zimmer said that she heard shots but didn't see a shooter. " They sounded more like a capgun," she said of the noise.

Sharp said he photographed the incident and another student videotaped the carnage -- material that has since been confiscated by authorities. He described the scene as "complete chaos. Everyone scrambled."

Panicked students were evacuated to the parking lot and a nearby shopping center. A helicopter and a team of medics and psychologists were rushed to the school after the police received a call to report the shooting.
