China's Top legislator Calls for Turning Beijing Greener

China's Top legislator Calls for Turning Beijing Greener
China's top legislator Li Peng Tuesday called for more efforts to improve the environment in and around Beijing.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC), said the capital city should further improve its energy consumption mix to reduce pollutant discharges, and do a good job of building forest shelter belts surrounding the capital.

Speaking to deputies from Beijing attending the annual session of the NPC, the chairman called on Beijing to strive for a successful bidding to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Li spoke highly of the progress Beijing has made in the past years, including its changed look, its constantly-improving environment, and a rapid development of its new- and high-tech industries as well as its service industry.

The chairman said Beijing should take the lead in administering the city according to law and improve community services for local residents.
