Election Body Announces Winner of Presidential Election in Cape VerdeCape Verde's National Election Commission (CNE) announced on Monday that Pedro Pires, the government-backed candidate, won the archipelago's presidential runoff vote on February 25 with a 17-ballot advantage. The CNE's tally showed Pires taking 75,828 votes, 17 more than Veiga's 75,811, out of 153,407 ballots, including blank and null votes, cast in the runoff election. But CNE president Adriano Freire cautioned that the official results could be altered as both Pires and the defeated opposition candidate Carlos Veiga are contesting results of several precincts before the Supreme Court. "The general count, which is the responsibility of the CNE, is now complete", Freira told a news conference in the capital Cidade da Praia. "As there are contests, the results may or may not change eventually", he said, adding that such was in the hands of the court. In a communique the Supreme Court said it would begin its " definitive analysis" of the contested results early this week. It confirmed that Pires has contested results from two precincts and Veiga from 10.
