Resettlement Project Helps 300,000 Needy Farmers in NW China
Zheng Hancong, a farmer from Langao County, in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, used to live in a village in a cold mountainous area 1,300 meters above sea level.
With the help of the local government, his family has moved to a forested area at the foot of the mountain where they have easy access to get out of poverty.
So far, the family has earned a profitable life from growing herbal plants and mushrooms and raising livestock.
Thanks to a resettlement project launched three years ago, some 300,000 poverty-stricken farmers in Shaanxi Province have left their villages and moved to places with better living conditions.
The resettlement project was started to help needy people who live in barren mountainous areas to quickly get out of poverty and live a better life.
The provincial government has spent more than 300 million yuan (36 million US dollars) on the project over the past three years.
