Inner Mongolia Swept by Sandstorm

West of the central part of the Xilin Gol League in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was hit by a sandstorm in the afternoon of March 5, the third time in six days.

The latest report from the region's meteorological station showed that this had been the fourth one since the beginning of this year. Wind speed in Baotou, Hohhot, Ih Ju League, Bayannur League, and western Alxa League were around 17 meters to 28 meters per second.

Visibility in Urad Rear Banner, Hohhot, and Horinger County were below 300 meters. Office building and apartments in Hohhot had to turn on their lights at 3 p.m.

Liu Jingtao, a local meteorologist, said sandstorms this year occurred earlier, covered a larger area and were stronger compared with those last year.

He also said more sandstorms will be expected in the next two months against the corresponding period last year.
