Sri Lankan President Meets With Visiting CPC Representative

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Monday told Li Chengren, visiting representative of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) that relations between her country and China, the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and CPC in particular are rather good.

Kumaratunga said that China has made enormous achievements in her socialist modernization drive and her government and SLFP follow closely the development in China. She expressed her wish that China would score even greater achievements in this regard.

On the issues of Taiwan and human rights, she said that it is reasonable for Sri Lanka to support China for the principles and stance she adopts concerning these matters as Sri Lanka is a good friend of China.

During the meeting Li, a member of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and former deputy head of the International Department of CPC Central Committee, conveyed to Kumaratunga greetings from Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese President. Kumaratunga also asked Li to convey her greetings to Jiang.

Li arrived here on Friday at the invitation of SLFP to attend the party's 13th National Convention in capital Colombo on Sunday.

Several leaders of Sri Lanka's political parties including main opposition United National Party also met with Li on different occasions.
