Sri Lankan Tamil Rebels Assault Music Fans in London

Sri Lankan separatist Tamil Tiger rebel gangs, angered by British ban on them as a foreign terrorist organization, attacked music fans outside Acton Town Hall in North London, The Island newspaper said on Monday.

A Sri Lankan music group, the Marians, had performed at the venue on Saturday night and, as the fans were leaving in the early hours of Sunday morning, they were attacked with swords and baseball bats by gangs of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels.

Several Sri Lankans were injured and admitted to hospital. One was in critical condition.

Elsewhere in London, it was also reported that gangs of Tamil rebels have been threatening Sri Lankans there for having got them banned in Britain.

Britain on Wednesday included the LTTE in a list of 21 "foreign terrorist organizations" under its new anti-terrorism law which went into effect on February 19.

The LTTE rebels have used their International Secretariat based in London for fundraising for their war to set up an independent Tamil state in the north and east of the country and propaganda campaign.

Police in Colombo were put on high alert for possible LTTE attack shortly after the British ban.
