Chub Put in Taihu Lake to Stop Spread of AlgaLocal authorities recently put 500, 000 white chub (a kind of fish) into the Taihu Lake in an attempt to help reduce the threat of a fast expanding blue and green alga on the water's surface.Blue and green alga have grown so abundantly over the past few years as a result of over-nutrition and the water in some areas of the lake looks very green. Though some suggest ladling alga with special boats, but it may not be feasible because the lake in east China's Jiangsu Province covers so large an area. Chub interestingly is the very enemy of alga because the fish lives on the floating plant. It is estimated that a chub will increase 0.5 kilograms by eating 5 kilograms of alga, and that by putting a dozen chub fish into a mu (0.667 hectare) of water, the water quality will considerably improve. |
