Hong Kong Major Media Hail Opening of NPC Meeting

All the major media in Hong Kong Monday devoted much of their coverage to the news of the opening of the Fourth Session of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC) of China.

Hong Kong major television stations telecast live Monday morning the report on the Outline of the Tenth Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development 92001-2005) made by Premier Zhu Rongji at the NPC session.

The Chinese language newspaper Wen Wei Po carried an editorial saying that China's new economic and social development plan is of great significance to the country's development in the new century.

The new plan gives full play of the roles of overseas and domestic markets and resources to quicken the steps of China's economic development and restructuring, the newspaper said.

"Hong Kong will have more opportunities in the development of the information technology, finance, services and re-exports as the mainland devotes more to international-oriented economic development model," it said.

South China Morning Post also said in a front page story that Premier Zhu Rongji's report is a grand economic plan that will lay a solid foundation to triple the country's gross domestic product in 10 years.

Hong Kong Economic Journal, also a Chinese language newspaper, said in its commentary that the new economic plan is a more progressive and opening one that will drive China's economic development to another new stage.
