Burundi Government Imposes Curfew on CapitalThe Burundian government imposed a night-time curfew on the capital Sunday, after more than a week of attacks by rebels of the Hutu extremist National Liberation Forces (FNL) in Bujumbura, according to a press report reaching here. The curfew runs from 8:00 p.m. (1800 GMT) until 5:00 a.m., a security services spokesman was quoted as saying. Almost 40 civilians and soldiers died when the FNL rebels launched a series of attacks on the capital a week ago, capturing the Kinama District in the north of the city. Fighting was continuing Sunday, as FNL fighters sent mortars into the neighboring district of Ngagara, where at least five people have been killed in the last four days, said the report. A government statement called on local people to organize self- defense groups. The United Nations Security Council on Friday condemned the rebel attacks, calling on them to join the peace process. Neither the FNL nor another rebel group, the Forces for the Defense of Democracy (FDD) signed last August's Peace and Reconciliation Agreement at Arusha, in neighboring Tanzania.
