China's first specialized hospitalfor wild birds was put into operation Saturday in this capital of central China's Hunan Province.

The hospital, built at a cost of over 200,000 yuan, has eight bird-care experts and advanced medical facilities.

Prof. Fu Keling, a noted Chinese bird expert and director of the hospital, said that establishment of such specialized hospitals will not only help provide health care precautions and treatment for birds, but also improve people's awareness of bird protection.

China currently has over 1,200 species of birds. However, many birds are prone to illness. "Our hospital aims to decrease their death rate to below 20 percent," said Fu.
