Meeting Boosts Aid for Western China Education

Several Party and government departments jointly hosted a meeting here Saturday to push forward a project to aid education in western China.

Under the project, 1,100 college students from poverty-stricken families in the 12 provinces and autonomous regions in the western areas of China will be selected every year. Each of them will

receive 20,000 yuan (about 2,409 U.S. dollars) in financial aid to help them complete higher education.

Liu Yunshan, executive deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said that the project is a practical measure to train more

outstanding professionals for the western region. The students will be the successors to and a new generation of builders of socialism, who have lofty ideals, moral integrity, a good education and a strong sense of discipline.

Minister of Education Chen Zhili urged the colleges and universities concerned to resolutely implement the project, to create a good study environment for the students.
