Earthquake Victims Continue to Protest in El Salvador

Salvadorian earthquake victims demonstrated Friday for a second day in San Salvador and other cities, saying they have not received relief assistance.

Groups of affected peasants arrived in San Salvador to demand governmental assistance, while similar protests were held in other cities. Some demonstrators asked for the delivery of really useful construction material instead of only cardboard sheets.

The two strong earthquakes in El Salvador this year left 1,259 killed, 9,000 injured, and 335,000 houses destroyed or damaged with a total economic loss exceeding US$1.6 billion.

Humanitarian organizations have warned for many days that the needs of thousands of Salvadorian victims are increasing while food and medicine reserves have reduced. Some opposition sectors have said that there have been political intervention in the allocation of international relief assistance.

The demonstrators have warned they will continue with their protest until their demands are satisfied.
