Another Prosecution in Jiangxi Bribe ScandalA company president, who gave the largest bribe to a former deputy governor of south China's Jiangxi Province, was prosecuted Friday for bribery, embezzlement of public funds, and theft.Hu Changqing, the former deputy governor, was sentenced to death by a local court in February 2000 for taking bribes valued at more than five million yuan (about US$602,000) between 1995 and 1999. Zhou Xuehua, the defendant, gave the deputy governor a total of 307,000 dollars and goods worth 650,000 yuan (about US$78,000) , including platinum and gold jewelry, and valuable watches, according to the People's Procuratorate of this capital of Jiangxi Province. Zhou misappropriated 5.7 million yuan when he was in office, procurators said. Zhou escaped from custody last March after being detained for questioning, and was re-arrested last June. To date, nine cases in connection with Hu's crimes, which were placed on file for investigation by the procuratorate, have been all prosecuted, and nine defendants in eight cases have been convicted. |
