African Union Proclaimed in Libya

Some 45 heads of state and government attending a special summit of the Organization of African Unity here proclaimed the establishment the African Union on Friday.

The establishment of the African Union, initiated by Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi in September 1999, was agreed upon by African leaders in the Declaration of Sirte at the 36th OAU summit in Lome, Togo, last July.

Its goal was to promote political and economic integration of the African continent in the face of challenges of economic globalization.
