India to Dispatch Troops to Ethiopia, Eritrea

India has decided to dispatch 1,197 troops for UN peace-keeping operations in Ethiopia and Eritrea, a spokesman of the External Affairs Ministry said Friday.

The Indian contingent, which is likely to be one of the largest in the 4,000-strong UN force, will include 879 personnel from the infantry battalion, a construction engineering company of 153 personnel and force reserve company of 165.

The schedule of deployment of Indian troops is between March and June this year.

Over 50,000 Indian troops, military observers and police personnel have taken part so far in 36 peace-keeping operations since the inception of UN.
