Bush, Simitis Have Phone Conversation on Regional Problems

Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis and US President George W. Bush had a phone conversation Friday on issues concerning the Balkan region.

During their phone conversation, Simitis briefed Bush on Greece 's position toward the Balkans, the Cyprus problem and Greek- Turkish relations, according to a press release issued by the premier's office.

Simitis voiced Athens' opposition to any border changes in the Balkans and said Greece supports the implementation of international laws.

On the Cyprus problem, Simitis said that Greece supports Cyprus' European Union (EU) accession. He stressed the need for the continuation of the UN-sponsored indirect talks between Cyprus' two communities.

Simitis reiterated Athens' support for neighboring Turkey's European course, which he noted will contribute to the development and stability in the region and the further improvement of the relations between Greece and Turkey.

On his part, Bush expressed his appreciation for Greece's role in supporting peace and stability in the region.

He stated that all US initiatives in the Balkans will be implemented in consultation with its allies in the region.

Bush said that the US is interested in preserving peace in the eastern Mediterranean region and supports the UN efforts for a resolution of the Cyprus issue.

The US president also proposed a meeting with Simitis who accepted the invitation.
