Rwandans Urged to Enhance Gender Advocacy

The Rwandan government has called on the academic society to come up with a common local name for gender as it has sometimes led to confusion on what exactly is meant while explaining gender, Rwanda News Agency reported Friday.

"Gender advocacy should not only be viewed as a responsibility of the ministry of gender and women in development, every organization in its capacity should bear this responsibility," said Rwandan Minister of Gender and Women in Development Angelina Muganza on Thursday while officiating a two-day consultative meeting on gender sensitization at St. Paul in Kigali, capital of Rwanda.

"All stakeholders concerned with gender issues need to draw a common term giving the agreed upon meaning of gender to avoid contradictions while carrying out training on gender advocacy," the minister explained.

She stressed that various contradictions which lead to unnecessary arguments have often come up during discussions on gender issues because different people have different ways of explaining what gender is all about. "That is why we need to have a common approach in addressing the issue," she said.

The meeting, which is scheduled to end Friday afternoon, has brought together different stakeholders concerned with gender issues, including non-governmental organizations at both national and international levels, and representatives from various ministries and schools.

The participants will view achievements and challenges as far as gender balance and development issues are concerned.
