China to Promote Safe Agricultural Products

An official with the Ministry of Agriculture said Friday that his ministry is planning to improve the safety of agricultural products.

Zhou Kaizhong, deputy director-general with the Ministry's Department of Market and Economic Information, said that China has successfully fed its big population after the ninth Five-Year Plan period (1996-2000) and the new problem it now faces is how to improve the quality of the food.

He said, "the way out is to advocate organic food."

The reform from the farm to the table is to improve the consumers' living standards, the official said. It will also help promote the adjustment of the industrial structure in China and the more competent agricultural food will be able to meet the international standard, he added.

Insiders say that initiated by Germany, the healthy consumption is trendy in the world and the mark of "health" is now a provision for most consumers.
