Farmer Laborer Granted Permanent Residence in City

A farmer laborer who has been working as a security guard in Xiamen in east China's Fujian province, together with his family, was recently granted permanent residence by the city mayor for his superb performance.

Zeng Zhiqiang, a farmer living thousands of miles away in the rural area of southwest China's Sichuan province, was praised as a farmer laborer for his special contribution to the city, by helping the local public security bureau capture about 3,100 criminals and various illegal goods while on duty as a security guard at the railway station.

Such cases are rare, as a permanent residence, a privilege for urbanites, symbolizes favorable treatment hardly attainable by farmers.

In the wake of a huge influx of farmer laborers into cities, social security has become a major concern as farmer laborers were believed to be poorly educated and were more likely to resort to fighting.

But as years goes by, farmer laborers have become increasingly civilized as they merge into urban life. Actually, many urbanites find farmer laborers an indispensable part of the normal operation of a city.
